Poland: Apple prices down to dramatic levels

This year's situation in the Polish apple market leaves much to be desired. Prices are dramatically low (this week, in the region of Grójec, apple prices have fallen to between 65-70 g/kilo, which is about 0.15 Euro) and stocks also remain at high levels. According to WAPA, Poland currently about 325 thousand tonnes of the fruit in storage, which is 30 percent more than last year. In the same period a year earlier, the total volume of apples stored amounted to 250 thousand tonnes.

Growers are concerned and wonder how they are going to operate in a situation where the Russian embargo may be extended. Another year without access to the Russian market may prove disastrous and there appears to be no end in sight for the conflict.
