Closed motorways and flooded inner cities

Heavy rainfall takes a toll across Europe

In recent days, Europe has been hit by heavy rain. The abundant rainfall has taken a toll across the continent. In Germany and France, some cities were flooded. The water-related incidents have resulted in four people losing their lives. Also in the Netherlands the rainfall has caused a number of nuisances and problems.

In the netherlands roads were closed due to mud and stones. The biggest problems are on the A74 between the Dutch border and the Tiglia junction. The A73 was temporarily closed.

On Monday, the amount of rain recorded was what would normally fall for the entire month of May. This afternoon, the weather agency expects heavy rainfall and hail in the east of the country. This could be accompanied by gusting wind. The weather service has issued a yellow code for the eastern provinces of the Netherlands.

Across the border, the devastation is even greater. In Germany, towns and villages were flooded. According to the latest reports, three people lost their lives in Simbach am Inn, in the German state of Bavaria. Other places that have been hit hard include Rottal Inn and Triftern. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated.

Many people in Bavaria were surprised by the rain. The water rose so quickly that people took refuge on the roofs. Again, the devastation is huge. Houses were flooded and streets and bridges are blocked. In southern Germany, a dyke is reported to have broken. Also in Bavaria, the rivers have burst their banks. In Austria, the Salzburg region was particularly badly affected by the rain; streets were flooded.

In France, the water caused the death of an 86 year old woman. The damage is greatest in central France. The Seine has burst its banks and flooded streets in Paris. The water also reached the threshold of the 16th-century palace Chambord, in the Loire Valley. Thousands of French people have been evacuated.

According to weathermen, in the future we will be suffering more of this extreme weather. "Welcome to the new climate," said one weatherman. "These are examples of weather conditions we are likely to see more of in the future."

If you want to see the sun, you can visit Ireland. The country that is most associated with rain, cold and fog, has enjoyed some bright sunny days. The temperature there has increased to 23 degrees Celsius. This weekend, temperatures are expected to reach 25 degrees. Scotland has also seen some great weather this week.
