Last year, strawberry growers in Huelva managed to reduce their water consumption by 40%, which means that they saved 1.7 billion litres of water, and in a particularly sensitive area, close to the Doñana National Park, declared Biosphere Reserve since 1980. Such an achievement was possible thanks to a project funded by the Innocent Drinks company, a subsidiary of Coca Cola, and developed by the research team AGR 227 (Hydraulics and Irrigation) of the University of Córdoba, which has been awarded the Guardian Sustainable Business Award, in its category dedicated to water.
As explained by the British newspaper The Guardian in its online edition, this award aims to acknowledge the work of companies committed to the sustainable use of water through projects, technologies, designs or policies that can help improve water availability, access to it or its quality.
The project developed by the University of Córdoba for Innocent Drinks over the past four years has managed to involve producers in the area and achieved the goal of reducing water consumption through efficient irrigation systems. Irrifresa allows growers to manage irrigation depending on the different types of soil, plant varieties and climatic conditions, but always through a simple application.
The project has the participation of Emilio Camacho, Pilar Montesinos, Rafael González, Manuel Martín, Irene Fernández, Juan Antonio Rodríguez and Jorge García.
