Agricultural exports in the first months of this year made good progress and increased by 4.6% over the same period of 2015.
According to reports from the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), agricultural exports amounted to $ 211.9 million because of the good development of different crops, such as banana, vegetables, and melon crops, and the diversification of non-traditional products that are shipped to competitive markets with great prices.
Ilsa Diaz Zelaya, the director of the Federation of Agricultural Exporters of Honduras (FPX), said that certain crops, such as the okra produced in the south, had a good performance in Asia.
Diaz Zelaya spoke about the success that the producers of ginger in Yoro had with their product in the United States and Japan, as well as producers of sweet potato, eggplant, Chinese cucumbers, watermelons, and a bean that is being exported to the US for Hondurans who feel nostalgic about their land.

Manuel Alfaro, president of the Federation of Fruit Growers of Honduras, spoke about the production of rambutan, which was delayed until September and ended in late March because of the drought.
"This happened in the area of La Masica and Sparta in Atlantis. However, prices were good in America," he said. The production of this exotic fruit experienced increases in new areas. The North American and Salvadoran market remain attractive and the goal is to expand to Nicaragua.
However, the big challenge for farmers is to increase consumption of this crop among Hondurans.
