Growing popularity pumpkin and sweet corn

China: Seasonal vegetables help alleviate rural poverty

"In recent years, increasing fruit supply in China has resulted in a more saturated market. Based on this, we changed our products from fruits to seasonal vegetables," explains Mr. Huang Hansheng from Guangxi Jin Hanwei Biotech.

"We now predominantly grow pumpkin and sweet corn. Firstly, the market demand for these two vegetables is relatively large. Secondly, compared to other vegetables, the risks that come with growing pumpkin and sweet corn are relatively low.“

”The season for pumpkins and sweet corn starts at the beginning of May and runs until the end of November. This year, due to an increase in production, average sales prices came down a little compared to last season. This has impacted small scale enterprises and individual growers, but had barely no impact on our company.“

"Our company is located in the city of Hezhou in Guangxi Province. We have a 200 hectares of open field plantations. In addition, we cooperate with local farmers that jointly manage an area of 6,700 hectares. We, and the growers we work with, mainly use organic fertilizers.”

Government support to alleviate rural poverty
"As a poverty alleviation project in Guangxi province, we offer seeds to local farmers for vegetable plantations and then purchase the produce they grow at a good price. During the process, the local government also provides us all around support. For example, we benefit from tax reductions and have also received infrastructural support. At this stage, we cooperate with an external logistics center and packaging companies. The government has announced it will start building a cold storage logistics center that covers a surface of 7 hectares.“

“Currently our products have not yet started to be sold on e-commerce platforms, and we mainly engage in traditional store sales. Our target sales areas include Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhouhai cities that are closer to Guangxi province. Some are sold through our wholesalers to other areas such as Shanghai city. Meanwhile we also plant around 33 hectares of snow peas, which are sold to Canana and other South East countries. In the next following years, we will try to expand our overseas markets by working with international trade companies, fertilizers and seeding companies. Moreover, we hope to sell our products to other countries such as Australia.”
