Leonardo Ferrer, Frueexport Colombia

"New generations look at agriculture from a business standpoint"

"The international market can pay up to five times more than the Colombian domestic market, but in order to gain entry to this profitable market, you need to obtain a number of certifications and meet established global standards. Also, if a company wants to be competitive, first it needs to regularise its administration and operations. Agriculture requires producers to look at things from a business standpoint and to regularise their production processes to ensure quality and safety in order to gain access to this international market," affirms Leonardo Ferrer, representative of Fruexport.

If we take into account that entering highly demanding markets can be difficult for Colombian producers with little regulatory experience, it is clearly essential to help them throughout the certification process and the implementation of processes that will allow them to reach their targets. "Agricultural producers in our country are still adapting; consequently, we are seeing the creation of partnerships to be able to meet the export requirements of the international markets. We offer them advice to help them meet the necessary quality standards and adhere to international regulations," stresses Ferrer.

While consultancies are relatively new to the South American country, the growing exports are progressively giving a boost to this process. "Colombia has a considerable productive capacity, but, in turn, it also has a high poverty rate in the agricultural sector. Peasants have many hectares of land, which provide them with the resources, but production is focused on traditional products and it is hard for them to switch to more profitable crops. Our strategy is to build on the new generations, who can look at agriculture from a business standpoint. This process is also very important for the country, as going in this new direction is key to improving the socioeconomic conditions of the rural population," concludes the spokesperson.
