The fruit and vegetable centre that Mogalla owns in the farm La Mogayuela de Cartaya is facing the final leg of an orange campaign which has been marked by a 25 to 30% decline in the production compared to 2015.
The high temperatures recorded during the previous spring prevented a normal development of the blooming period. This circumstance led to the fall of many flowers and, therefore, the loss of much fruit.
This campaign, which started in November with the harvest of the Navelina variety and will conclude in mid-June with the Valencia Late and Midknight, the prospect is that the fruit and vegetable centre of Cartaya will handle about 25 million kilos of oranges.
Mogalla, which has some 1,000 hectares devoted to citrus crops in the provinces of Seville and Huelva, usually handles its oranges in Cartaya's facilities, since the production of clementines, which reaches 2.5 million kilos, is sold directly from the field, with the exception of some varieties.
Almost 70% of the oranges marketed by Mogalla from the Cartaya centre are intended for the European market. The main destinations are France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland, where the oranges are sold under the brands Mogalla and Tangerina.
The remaining 30% is distributed across the country, with shipments going to Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Seville and the Canary Islands.
Mogalla has a wide range of varieties, with which it is able to meet the demand of the markets from November to June. The first variety to arrive in November to the fruit and vegetable centre of Cartaya is the early Navelina, followed by the Salustiana, Sanguinelli, Lane Late and Navel Powell. The campaign is closed with the Chislett, Valencia Late and Midknight late.
