Early Malinois cauliflower nicely on time
The outdoor season for cauliflower has started again. “Last week we started harvesting, and supply is starting as well,” cultivator Jos Stevens says. “Compared to last year, the situation is better. Many types were on the market then, while currently one type follows another, and the different types enter the market more spread out. The season started calmly, and right now there is room for the early Malinois cauliflower.”
Smaller volume
Especially during the first half of the season Stevens is not expecting oversupply. “It was of course a warm winter, and the cauliflower sprouts were larger, and could not all be planted. There were also a number that did not grow a good flower. This caused the volume to be smaller than last year around this time. Luckily, quality of the cauliflower is good, and they are very flavourful. It is also important that consumers know they are available again.”
Stevens is also happy with the prices. “Last week prices varied between 1.50 and 2 euro, and on Monday prices were still at 1.50 euro.” Stevens expects more supply will arrive in two weeks. “More cultivators are harvesting now, so volume will rise quickly. Prices might drop slightly then, but we will have to wait and see. We are of course hoping for a better season than last year.”
