Weather puts damper on early Serbian strawberries

Rain and cold weather has put a damper on the early strawberry season in Serbia. The strawberries are grown in open fields and the current rainfall has been causing some quality issues. Unusually cold temperatures over the weekend a little over a week ago did not help, with temperatures dipping as low as 10 degrees, but they have started to rise back up again and Nenad Toncic, General Manager of Frigonais doesn't expect this to have any negative effect on any other fruits.

Frigonais produces and processes strawberries, cherries, plums, raspberries, blackberries and apples. They deal in frozen fruits as well as hot preparation for fruit puree, jam and materials for fruit yogurt.

The company sends their fruit to Italy, Germany, France and the rest of Europe. Due to the fact that Frigonais's products are processed, the company also trades with Russia.

"It can be a challenge at times to do business with Russia. Things are going well this season because of the current situation. Russia tends to buy from Serbia when the market is going well there, but they tend to turn to Polish production when the market isn't doing so well." shared Toncic.

Yearly production of all fruits averages 7000-8000 tonnes per year, with an annual average export value of around 5 million.
