Dolf Ursem: “Fairly good demand at the start of the season”

Dutch iceberg lettuce season has begun

On Tuesday the company Ursem-Zuurbier from Heerhogowaard started harvesting the first Dutch iceberg lettuce. “The first ones were slightly compact, but what is arriving looks good. Starting today, we have ‘tenners’ (ten heads per box),” Dolf Ursem says. “Because of the expected cold weather, supply will not just erupt.”

“Demand is already fairly good. Spain currently has bad weather, and the cutting plants are already starting to work at full speed, so the circumstances for a good market exist. In addition, Dutch product all looks qualitatively well,” says Ursem, who is a member of growers association Everest (five members, 350 hectares).

According to the grower the Dutch iceberg lettuce area has remained fairly even. “Last year there was a revival during August and September, but we had already had half a season with mediocre prices. Growers do not forget that. If you do not have the customers, it would not be wise to expand with iceberg lettuce.”
