This year, significant losses will be recorded with the early varieties

"Our apricot supply will grow by 40% in coming campaigns"

Bad weather is delaying the start of the stonefruit campaign in several production areas in Spain, where the first apricots should have already been harvested.

"We'll be starting the campaign four days later than last year, given the rainfall and temperature drops recorded in early May. This weekend, when the rains stop, we hope to start harvesting the first Mogador and Colorado apricots," explains Daniel Blanco, commercial director of Mogalla SAT.

The fall in the apricot production has been considerable in Spain due to the lack of cold hours in the early spring. "According to estimates on our farms, the production of the first varieties, such as the Mogador, Colorado, Luca and Megatea, should fall by between 30 and 40%. The midseason varieties, like the Flodea, Flopria and Latica, however, should reach the usual volumes, compared to previous years," affirms the producer and exporter.

Switch from Paraguayo peaches to apricots
The company, based in Cartaya, Huelva, is showing a strong commitment to apricots over other types of stonefruit.

"This year, we have reduced the acreage devoted to Paraguayo peaches to plant mostly Mogador and Colorado apricots, which are varieties that tend to have good demand and reach good prices during their respective production periods. With this investment, our apricot supply should grow by 40% in the coming campaigns."

"To China we prefer shipping oranges instead of stonefruit"
"Our stonefruit campaign is relatively short, generally starting in early May and ending in early June, so our productions are mainly intended for the European market, for countries like France, Italy, the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany, among others. The option of shipping to China, however, does exist for our citrus, given our production volume. The idea we have is to certify our production to be able to ship oranges to this destination next season," affirms Daniel Blanco.

New website and stronger presence on social media
Mogalla launched its new website, www.mogalla.com, only a month ago. "It is much more dynamic and accessible with any mobile device and contains photos and updated information about our products, farms and facilities. It is also connected to our social media activity on Facebook (Mogalla SAT) and Twitter (@satmogalla).
