Launch Xianju bayberry season in 2 weeks

China: Local economy boosted by bayberry production

"Our cooperative was established in 2011. Our main varieties are the Xianju Biqi and Xianju Dongkui bayberry. After 5 years of product innovation, we have registered our own trademark, which is called 'Junlang'. We now have a stable consumer base,“ explains Mr. Ying Jun, responsible for the Junlang Plantation Professional Cooperative in Xianju County.

"Xianju bayberries will be available on the market from June the 10th. The season lasts approximately 4 week until July 5th. Important factors for bayberry production are the climate and the soil. Xianju County has a subtropical monsoon climate and the geographical location offers adequate sunshine for bayberry production."

"Our cooperative owns an area of around 15 hectares of bayberry plantations. All the bayberries are planted outdoors. Regarding fertilizers, we use a combination of manure and organic fertilizer to achieve optimal cultivation effects. Our bayberries are primarily sold to wholesalers, supermarkets and online retailers on the domestic market, including in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces and across Shanghai. Our future focus lies on first tier and second tier cities."

"Our bayberries are large in size and sweet in taste, which is appreciated by consumers. Firstly, we strictly follow green food standards laid out by the Chinese government. Local professionals visit our plantation bases on a regular basis for technical guidance. Secondly, we receive support from the local agricultural bureau. Bayberries are one of the leading revenue generating industries in our county. Therefore, local quality standards for bayberries are rather high, and pesticide residues are strictly monitored. That is one of the main reasons why our bayberry prices are maintained in a very stable level."

"80% of our yields are sold through the internet. To guarantee optimal delivery, we have implemented both regular carton packaging and vacuum packaging. The first are used for short-distance customers, such as customers within our province. The second packaging method is widely applied to long distance delivery. This is done by the Shunfeng Express cold chain system, air shipment or cold chain trucks."

"Looking into the future, our bayberry business is very promising. We will continue to look for new market opportunities. Overseas markets will be considered as well. We hope that the government will lower the requirement for bayberry exports and taxes. We look forward to delivering our top quality bayberries to overseas markets."
