Domestic crop to replace Vietnamese imports

Passion fruit big in Shanghai market

As a fruit variety that originated from Brazil, the passion fruit, is gradually becoming more popular in China.

Recent years passion fruits are more and more widely used in dishes and drinks, which stimulates the consumers' demand increase. Compared with merely a few carton sales 10 years ago, now over hundreds of cartons can be sold per day on the Shanghai wholesale market. Following its growing popularity, the price of passion fruits also increases from over 60 Yuan per case to over 90 Yuan.

Production Regions

The passion fruit is planted mainly in sub-tropical and tropical regions in China, including Hainan, Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi province. Generally speaking, Vietnamese passion fruits can be supplied all year around. Domestic passion fruit is listed on the market between every June to February in the following year. In China, they are not planted on a large scale and the cultivation areas are widely spread. In certain coastal regions such as Fujian and Guangdong province, passion fruit cultivation is at risk of typhoons. In Guangxi province, passion fruit quality and production is stable.

Domestic passion fruit is popular compared to Vietnamese imports: it is lower in price and sweeter in taste compared with Vietnamese passion fruits.

Commonly speaking, fruit growers start to pick passion fruit when the fruit is 70% ripe. Brix levels then hoover around 12 and 14. The fruits skin colour darkens when it becomes more mature. Brix levels will rise up to 15-18 throughout the ripening process.
