China: growth in domestic blueberry production
"Our company is an integrated enterprise that specializes in blueberry cultivation, breeding, marketing and processing. Founded in 2010, we have our own registered brand 'Bing Quan Jian'. In the past 16 years we have established a stable client base on the Chinese market."
"Near the Dazashan mountain range in Qingdao we grow on 14 hectares. We use one hectare as a blueberry picking garden where visitors can roam. We have two hectares for indoor plantations and on the remaining 13 hectares we grow blueberries in the open ground. We grow Northern blueberry varieties, including Duke blueberries, Lanfeng, Beilu and Dayou."
"Transport is an issue in China. Blueberries demand strict temperature control and are fragile. We sell the majority of our crop to neighbouring supermarkets. In addition, we sell a small amount via air freight to more distant cities such as Beijing. The remainder of our crop is send to processing factories near the city of Yantai. The berries are made into juice and dried blueberries."
"Blueberry production is growing rapidly in China. Investors are attracted by high output rates and returns on investment. The overall market performance is not as good as of strawberries or cherries I would say. Demand is growing because consumers are aware of the nutritional value of blueberries. The volume of import blueberries is also increasing. Generally, import blueberries do not compete with local production because the seasons do not clash."
