In addition to the already-existing 25 hectares of Zincal 17 and Zincal 20, the company has planted 12 new hectares of early Zincal 3 and Zincal 8. Three years after the most recent trees were transplanted, a production of 30 tons/hectares with perfect progression has been estimated. This will lead to the production of perfect tasty fruit from now until early June.
A single productive branch was maintained, oriented diagonally to facilitate harvesting and favour the absorption of sunlight. Trees blossom very early and therefore pollination is carried out with bumblebees.
"Nowadays, using new techniques to cultivate peaches is the only way to tackle climate change," explains Carmela Suriano.
The produce is destined entirely to the domestic market. Zincal are sub-acidic nectarines with a pleasant taste much appreciated by consumers.
Agronomist Dino Marchitelli explains that "everything went as expected. The harvesting of Zincal varieties, selected by Spanish breeder Planasa, is progressive and the protected environment in which they are cultivated means they are ready earlier than other varieties and quality is excellent."
Of course the cost of such structures is significant, but companies must assess orchards in terms of cost/benefit. The price of nectarines available on the market today is not the same as that of traditional varieties.
