Start blueberry season mid-May 2016

Rheinland Blaubeeren has more than 6 month supply of blueberries

Rheinland Blaubeeren in Straelen expects the first ripe blueberries from unheated greenhouse cultivation from mid-May. Theo Douven explains that they selected special flavour strains for this, which are also suitable for exclusive greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation. “The blueberries are marketed through direct marketing and boutiques for fruits and vegetables, farm shops, (ambulant) trade or catering. Because of the fresh berries, traditionally processed blueberry products are also available year-round in our company shops in Straelen, Germany, and Horst-Melderslo in the Netherlands.”

“An important part of strains cultivated by us originates from Mediterranean regions, so they require less cold and are better suited for greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation. The flavour and healthy nutritional ingredients of these cultivated berries are praised, because the flavour strains in combination with the well-matured, harvested berries are carefully selected. The berries have a maximum shelf life for versatile use because they are hand-picked daily and delivered quickly.”

Blueberries for more than 6 months
For the advancement of our blueberries we use older greenhouses, no longer suitable for efficient heating, but perfect for natural advancement, prior to the regular blueberry summer season. This year, in combination with our outdoor cultivation and storage of berries in special cold rooms, we will be able to supply more than 6 months of blueberries from our own cultivation. Through greenhouse cultivation the berries can also be better protected against climatic conditions such as, for example, frost, rain or hail. Our organically integrated berry cultivation is unique, because food safety is optimally guaranteed.

Healthy
International research shows that the health aspects are confirmed time and again, and they deem blueberries a ‘functional food’ that can slow the ageing process in humans. An intervention study conducted by Maastricht University looked at the links between bioactive matter - antioxidants - in blueberries and the protective effects in humans. Its conclusion: blueberries help prevent obesity and diabetes and may contribute to a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and a reduced risk of cancer.

The natural health aspects of blueberries combined with the delicious flavour and unprecedented number of uses have boosted global demand for blueberries enormously for years.
