Increased demand for ripening chambers

In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in demand for exotic fruit, with the avocado being the biggest mover. Consumers expect their avocados to be ripe and ready to eat on the supermarket shelves. The knock on effect is that many fresh produce importers and distributors invest in ripening chambers. As a supplier of components for ripening rooms, Dutch company BG Doors has also seen an increase in demand.

"Besides our well known banana ripening chambers we are asked more and more to build ripening chambers for exotic fruit," explained Willem van der Does from the company.

"Last week we delivered four mango ripening rooms to Kempen Koude Techniek for installation at ABC Westland and we will also deliver another two systems to ARCO Koel Techniek which will be installed at Starfresh Liege in Luik. Our next project with four systems will be for Nijssen who also applies our gas-tight doors and equipment on regular basis."

As well as ripening rooms, BG Doors also manufacture and supply suction walls with foam buffers and special electrically operated curtain closures where part loads can be stored and ripened quickly and accurately. These pre-cool walls are also suitable for various products which require rapid cooling.
