Zaiger almonds, the solution to fluctuating harvests

The main problem affecting almond producers is the fluctuating harvests due to climatic factors. The Independence variety, developed recently by Zaiger Genetics, is far from a conventional almond. Its most notable feature: self-fertility. In other words, the tree flowers don't need not be pollinated by another variety, a process which depends on bees. With this, the almond production is consistent every year, regardless of climatic factors. This makes the crop more cost-effective, in addition to the savings involved in not having to rent bees.

"This variety, developed by Zaiger Genetics, is a soft-shelled almond that can be cracked by hand. Its main feature, besides being self-fertile, is the fruit's excellent quality, comparable with that of the prestigious Non Pareil. Its productivity is very high and consistent year after year, making it the best alternative almond. In conclusion, it is an almond with a consistent production during the harvest period," states Juan Concha Ureta, vice president of Viveros Requinoa.

The great advantage of this variety is its consistency in terms of production. Also, given that it is a non-perishable product, it can be stored for more than a year without any issues. "In Chile it is harvested from March to April and exports go mainly to Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. This is the only variety that is not affected by climate change or the impact of the El Niño and La Niña phenomena, which is also boosting interest in the variety," concludes the representative of the Chilean company.
