Goal is to achieve Global GAP certification

Peru: Investment to improve competitiveness of mango from Piura

According to the Sierra Exportadora program, the District Municipality of Tambogrande will invest more than 600,000 soles in the mango chain in the district of Tambogrande, in the region of Piura. The goal of the investment is to promote and improve the competitiveness of this fruit's production chain and to get certified by Global GAP good agricultural practices.

Thus, Tambogrande has becomes the first local government in the Piura region to lead the implementation process of the Procompite by allocating resources to improve production and trade competitiveness in its territory.

Alfonso Velasquez Tuesta, the CEO of Sierra Exportadora, welcomed this initiative and stressed that local authorities were interested in implementing management policies that encourage entrepreneurship, which made them the leaders and managers of a new way of creating wealth and development in their respective territories.

He recalled that Gabriel Antonio Madrid Orue, the district mayor of Tambogrande, had won the Creation of Public-Private Partnerships award category during the III National Productive Mayor National Prize 2015 after having created strategic alliances between central government institutions and US private institutions to strengthen the capacities of small producers in their jurisdiction.

Sierra Exportadora's branch in Piura stated that they had prioritized the mango production chain so as to make it more sustainable, as the valley of San Lorenzo, which is located in the district of Tambogrande, has 1,600.5 hectares devoted to the production of Kent, Keith, and Haden mangoes.

"The idea is to make a significant investment to enable optimal results in terms of productivity through heavy purchasing investments," they stated.

In addition, Tambogrande's Local Economic Development's management is interested in promoting this production chain in 2016, as they plan to focus on the production chain of organic bananas next year.

It should be noted that Sierra Exportadora will hire a professional from the Territorial Productive Development area so that he accompanies the whole call because said public body is part of the team for the implementation and invitation of the local Procompite.

Mango exports
The district of Tambogrande is the leading exporter of mangoes in Peru as it exports 160.3 million dollars in mango per year, i.e. 82 percent of all Peruvian mango exports. Tambogrande exports 349 containers of fresh mango and 83 containers with industrialized mangoes per year to Europe and the United States, among other places.

21.4 million soles were invested in 2015 to support the value chains promoted by Sierra Exportadora. This money was destined for small farmers in the regions of Apurimac, Huanuco, Junin, La Libertad, Lima-Provinces and Tacna.
