Venezuela: Possible shortage of potatoes at the end of year

The director of Venezuela's National Federation of Potato Producers and Vegetables, Aldemaro Ortega, said it's possible there will be a shortage of potatoes by the end of the year if producers don't purchase seeds. Therefore, he urged the Minister of Agricultural Production and Land of Venezuela, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, to make a decision regarding the purchase of seeds for the production of potatoes.

"We strongly request an answer because the Canadian producers are saying that there is and will be no request for seeds," said Aldemaro Ortega.

"We want to know what happened. Was the Association of Farmers of Canada paid? What happened with the resources? Why haven't the potato seeds arrived to Venezuela?" asked the director of the federation.

He stated that the delay in the importation of seeds affected nearly 7,000 potato farmers in the Andean states (Merida, Tachira, and Trujillo), and more than 1,500 producers in Lara.
