Poland: First greenhouse tomatoes hit market

The first Polish greenhouse tomatoes arrived on the domestic market this week.

Warm weather conditions had a positive effect on the ripening terms of domestic vegetables in Poland last week. As a result, more and more greenhouse farms started their tomato season. The starting prices for B size tomatoes vary between 1.56-1.76 euro/kg, and BB size produce is offered at 1.72-1.96 euro/kg.

The current supply of domestic tomatoes in Poland is very big at the moment and the first larger volumes from greenhouses are expected to ship within the month.

The 2015 Polish domestic tomato season also started in the beginning of April. Prices of the first volumes of B size tomatoes were similar to current levels, while BB sized produce was 7% less expensive.

Prices had been rapidly decreasing since the beginning of the previous season, and tomatoes became 50% less expensive over a month. As regards this season's outlook, the market participants expect negative price trend also to be in effect this year in case of stable favorable weather conditions.
