Mexico: Guanajuato wants to produce more berries

Victor Hugo Pineda, a delegate of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in Guanajuato, said the agency was working in coordination with the State's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SDAyR) to identify and support projects to produce strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, among others, in order to increase the state's production.

Pineda said they should support and promote producer because food exports were one of the biggest sources of foreign exchange inflows into the country.

"We make more revenues from farm product exports than we make from oil exports or from foreign remittances. That's why secretary José Calzada has instructed to detect strawberries projects we can support," he stressed.

When asked how they would support said projects, he said that "there are several programs that are ready to start working. We need to know these projects and we need to determine the type of support that we will provide them with. This will be ready in the coming months."

The state, among the biggest producers
The delegate of SAGARPA said their goal was to help the berry industry to grow.

"The main products are strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry. Their production has increased by about 8% production in the state. We are one of the best berry producers because the water used to irrigate these products comes from deep wells, that has a higher quality," he said.

Pineda said they would announce the program that will be promoted in the state of Guanajuato once they have it ready.
