Ecuador has great potential to produce organic bananas

"Wariness about organic production limits growth"

Demand for Ecuadorian organic bananas is not growing at the desired pace, mainly because of the lack of momentum in the production and product promotion. Currently, the main exporters are large multinationals and small independent exporters. "Compared to the production of conventional bananas, the organic banana harvest takes place in a much smaller scale. The conventional production yields a greater number of boxes per hectare, which, in basic terms, is more lucrative for the producers," affirms Mercedes Molina, commercial manager at Marplantis.

Ecuador has a very high production capacity due to its suitable climate and soil, which make it possible to produce 52 weeks a year. But fear of pests and the high cost of labour have resulted in the organic production of Ecuadorian bananas not growing significantly in recent years, staying at an average of 500,000 boxes per week.

"Many producers are cautious about switching from conventional to organic, mainly because pests are much more difficult to control. Moreover, it is worth noting that Ecuador is a country with a humid tropical climate, which facilitates the appearance of pests and accentuates the concerns about growing without chemicals," stresses the representative of Marplantis.

The main difference between conventional and organic production is the use of chemicals. While conventional fruit is not contaminated on the inside, it should be taken into account that the level of pollution of the environment is often very high. Not to forget the chemical exposure of farm workers, as this could lead them to suffer serious illnesses.

"Organic production offers many advantages for everyone involved in the distribution chain. Producers, importers and consumers alike should not forget that organic production is also aimed at caring for the environment and the soil and at protecting diversity, as well as the agricultural workers, who are the most important link in the production chain. Pests are controlled by micro-organisms and products certified as organic. Experience has taught us the necessary techniques and we have the ability to properly handle the problems," concluded Molina.
