In January 2016, the Canary Islands shipped 29,677 tonnes of bananas to mainland Spain; meanwhile, imports from Africa and Latin America reached 23,908 tonnes and re-exports amounted to 6,355 tonnes, so that consumers had access to a total of about 47,229 tonnes of bananas. This is about 999 tonnes more than last month, which entails a 2.2% increase in the available supply. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 37% and a maximum of 51%.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in January were Ivory Coast, with 6,827 tonnes, Costa Rica, with 5,025 tonnes, Colombia, with 3,827 tonnes and Cameroon, with 3,154 tonnes. Together, these four countries accounted for 79% of the imported volume. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, with 4.4 million Euro, Costa Rica with 2.4 million, Colombia, with 2.1 million and Cameroon, with 1.7 million Euro were the main suppliers in terms of value, accounting for more than 79% of the total.
