Crop enhancement technologies next big pillar of support

"Helping growers to accomplish more with less"

Plant Impact specialises in crop enhancement products that improve quality and yield. The company’s scientists work in close cooperation with academic institutions to design foliar sprays and seed treatment products that stimulate natural plant responses. This strengthens the plants to cope with heat, drought or chemical inputs and boosts their yield and quality.

“Our headquarters is in the UK and we have offices in Brazil and North America. We are a bridge between the academic world and growers. As such, we are spearheading the commercial development of novel technologies for the grower. We guide the research process to maximise relevancy and novelty. In order to do so, we work in close cooperation with research centres such as Lancaster University and Rothamsted Research in the UK,” says Stefanie Hingley, Marketing Manager, EMEA at Plant Impact.

“Growers in Spain face problems that are similar to growers elsewhere. One of the issues that growers face is how to meet the yield or quality standards demanded by the modern market. There are a number of reasons that can diminish yield, such as abiotic stresses like heat and drought. We provide growers with proven products based on research that enable them to address these issues and increase their yield,” says Ignacio Vicente, Global Crop Manager, Specialty Crops.

Stefanie continues: “absolutely spot on. The demands the market is putting on growers are sky rocketing. Consumers are looking for very specific sizes, colours, tastes. At the same time, growers need to meet a lot of regulations, operate under narrow margins and generally have to manage to accomplish more with less.” Hence, growers are looking for new solutions and crop enhancement is providing many of them."

“Trading in Europe is controlled by a limited amount of retailers, and growers are aiming for consistent quality throughout the year. The situation in markets like Germany and the UK is similar to the situation in Spain. In Almeria and Murcia, the biggest competitive contracts between growers and retailers are for year-round supply. Producing as much as possible per week is not as important as being able to predict how many kilograms will be produced. Commercial vegetable production increasingly involves producing what has already been demanded” explains Ignacio.

“We design innovative and tested chemical products that can replicate what nature is doing, but in a consistent way. There are so many effects that can impact production, it can be really beneficial to have something that helps stabilise these impacts. Traditionally, in the industry, there were just seed producers, fertilizer companies and crop protection producers (insecticides, pesticides) providing auxiliary services. Now, this new pillar of crop enhancement technologies has arrived which helps to provide more value to the grower,” concludes Ignacio.
