At Van Dijk Foods Belgium
Spanish nectarines four weeks earlier
The Spanish stonefruit season started very early this year. Importer Van Dijk Foods Belgium has already received the first Spanish nectarines. Henk Vlaeminck pointed out that the season has kicked off four weeks earlier than the open ground production. "Last year, we started on 14 April, but this time the nectarines have arrived earlier because of the good weather in December. At first, the normal production was expected to arrive at the same time, but this has been delayed due to the colder nights in February."
Indoor cultivation
The nectarines are shipped by the Spanish trader Agromartin and are grown indoors. Agromartin has been cultivating fruit for years and has about 135 covered hectares devoted to stonefruit, especially nectarines. They also grow plums, peaches and Paraguayo peaches.
The nectarines are marketed under the brand Aromas. "The quality of these nectarines is already perfect. The available sizes at this time are calibres 35 to 24. The product is packaged in boxes of about four kilos." Henk has good prospects for the season. "Today we received three pallets and volumes will gradually increase to three/four trucks per week and we expect a good demand."
