Local oranges used for AU's first 'authentic' aperitif
Sacha La Forgia, founder of Adelaide Hills Distillery, has released what he calls Australia's first 'authentic' Campari-type liqueur. La Forgia emphasises the importance of using quality fresh produce in the process and sources the oranges from South Australia's Riverland region.
Sacha La Forgia has been crafting his version of the bitter orange aperitif for years, after being taught the recipe and distillation process in its country of origin, Italy. "My version of this kind of falls neatly between a Campari and an Aperol," he said.
Mr La Forgia concedes at least one other distillery has released an Australian-made Campari product, but claimed it was not made using authentic methods.
The boutique distiller does not use artificial flavours and is working to build local partnerships for all the ingredients.
"The quality of the fruits, herbs and spices that we receive has a massive impact on the final product, so the sooner we can start working with local growers, farmers and spice traders, the better," he said.
"All the citrus comes from the Riverland. It has beautiful bright, fresh aromas and flavours that in my mind can't be substituted by anything else. We're very lucky."
Mr La Forgia has also used Riverland oranges to create his own gin and white spiced rum.
Local bars and bottle shops have agreed to stock his spirits.
