Peruvian exports of chillies and peppers to amount US 286 million

The Exporters Association (ADEX) estimated that Peruvian capsicum exports in 2016 would amount to $286 million dollars because of the increase in demand of chillies and peppers in different markets in the world.

The president of ADEX, Eduardo Amorrortu, stated that the chillies and peppers produced in Peru were appreciated in the international market, as could be seen between 2011 and 2015, when exports increased by 14% in value and by 62% in volume.

The three main markets for Peruvian chillies and peppers are the US, Spain, and Mexico.

This sector's main product is the canned capsicum, as shipments of this product amounted to 9 million dollars and accounted for 48% of exports during January. Dried capsicum exports follow with 8 million dollars in January. Fresh capsicum exports are still minimal but, since the US market was opened in September, they are expected to grow significantly this year.

The world beholds Peru
The president of ADEX, Eduardo Amorrortu, said that, as a result of the good positioning that the Peruvian capsicum have in the international market, Peru had been chosen to host the 23rd International Pepper Conference, the sector's most important event of the year. The event will take place between June 15 and the 17 at the Costa del Sol Hotel in Trujillo .

"In the event, the scientific community that make up the International capsicum network, will share innovations and information that is likely to generate new options for sustainable development in time," he said. He said it was absolutely necessary for producers, exporters, public, and private institutions to work in an integrated manner.
