Wholesale market Cologne

Plans for new location starting to develop

The plans for the new location of the wholesale market Cologne are starting to develop. According to the local news station the Kölnischer Rundschau, the CDU and Greens in Cologne have formulated a joint proposal for the next council meeting. Until September the possibilities for a new location should be researched. When a new location is found the wholesale market has to be designed together with interested parties. If the search for a location remains unsuccessful the wholesale market remains at the current location at Marsdorf.

At the end of February FreshPlaza reported that the annoyance amongst wholesalers increased due to the uncertain future of the wholesale market. The plans stated that the wholesale market will have left the old location, the Bonntor at the beginning of 2020. Before that, all wholesale companies have to move to a new location. But at the moment nothing much is happening. Michael Rieke of the interest group “Kölner Großmarkt” stated in that article: “The 180 companies based at the wholesale market and the 2,000 employees lack security about the planning and the time is slipping away.”

According to the proposal of the CDU and Green faction the first priority is to find a new location. But at the same time the plans for the Marsdorf location should continue to be developed. The local news station reports that the project management should create a “concept planning, which includes costs." Further steps should then be coordinated with the interested “wholesales market parties.” Several operational possibilities should be surveyed and urban influences should be taken into account.

The local news station furthermore reports, “for the implementation of change a timeline and a action plan should be created” which should be coordinated with ‘Parkstadt Süd.’ And furthermore it is also important to research if investments in the current location are necessary and efficient for the remainder of the time.
