The primary objective of exporters and importers, who appealed to the Executive so that it intervened in the conflict with Mexico due to the ban on avocados, is avoiding trade and economic sanctions from the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The members of the Chamber of Importers of Perishables sent a letter to Luis Guillermo Solis asking him to intervene by finding a scientific and technical solution to the trade dispute.
"We request that, as president of the Republic, you act to prevent Mexican authorities from initiating a dispute against Costa Rica at the WTO," the letter states.
The Chamber estimates that the country would initially spend more than US 500,000 to address this process, plus the compensation it would have to pay to producers affected by the measure.
Costa Rica has closed its borders to Mexican avocado since June last year, claiming that their production is affected by the sunblocht virus, which represents a danger to their crops.
