Wholesaler from Essen satisfied with Dutch tomatoes

“Our Dutch producers started to supply us with cucumbers and tomatoes,” states Mustafa Karahan manager of Maxime BVBA, situated at the fresh food market in Essen. “The demand is currently quite good and we hope for a good price.” At the moment the market is dominated by the Spanish supplies but the importers are counting on a decrease of the Spanish supplies. And that is why the Dutch supplies are so welcome. “And this year the Dutch tomatoes will be available throughout the entire year,” states Karahan, “The produce is good, absolutely excellent!” In the Netherlands increasingly more vine and smaller tomatoes are cultivated.

Citrus fruit: “A visible process”
Due to the increased supply the prices of citrus fruit have slightly decreased. “We import Spanish and Turkish citrus fruit,” explains Karahan, “A successful combination.” And while Mustafa Karahan receives the largest part of his citrus fruit from Spain, he notices a slight increase in the Turkish citrus fruit. “The Turkish producers try and develop a lot. A process has been started and is clearly visible. The quality of the supply increases every day,” states the expert.

Wholesaler expands his range
In addition to the tomatoes and citrus fruit, herbs, such as parsley and dill, and spinach and little gem lettuce which the wholesaler sells are in high demand. And recently the wholesaler has expanded his range. “To meet the demand of our Middle Eastern customers we have expanded our range in that direction,” states Karahan, “It is our goal that our customers can find 80% of the products they need with us. That is why we expanded our large range of fresh food with dry goods and several oriental spices.”
