Australia's melon growers are bound for Mildura
next week for the biennial conference and field
days at the property of John and Melisa Hederics,
Trentham Cliffs, near Mildura.
The conference will bring together growers, researchers and supply chain representatives from across the industry for an innovative three day on-farm event.
“Hosting the conference on-farm makes sure that the conference experience is a valuable and practical one for all of the industry,” said AMA Chairman Mark Daunt. “We just want to give growers the chance to really hone their knowledge and skills and to expose them to new ideas and opportunities,” he said.
Due to the increased level of farm biosecurity since Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus was discovered in the Northern Territory, this conference provides a rare opportunity to assess new varieties up close.
“We just want to give growers the chance to evaluate varieties, look at new technologies and discuss how they can continue to farm in a profitable way,” Mr Daunt said.
The conference will feature presentations by speakers covering such diverse fields as agronomy, varieties, pest control, food safety and melon quality. Speakers are travelling from Israel, Spain and the United States to present the latest research. They will be joined by Australian scientists with reports on research into crop protection, irrigation, food safety, composting, grafting and melon breeding.
The conference features Dr Aviv Dombrovsky from the Volcani institute in Israel, Paco Lopez, a melon expert from Spain and US melon breeders, Dr Jeff Mills, Dr Rakesh Kumar and Dr Matt Kinkade.
The Australian Melon Industry Conference & Field Days will be held in Mildura from 16 – 18 March 2016.
