Spain: 70% of cherry sector joins forces

The main Spanish cherry producing, processing and marketing companies from eight autonomous regions (Extremadura, Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Castile-Leon, Andalusia, La Rioja and Murcia), which account for around 70 % of the national production of this precious fruit, have formalised the creation of the Cherry Sector Board with the goal of creating a forum for communication between different producing areas in the country. Ultimately, the idea is to strengthen the sector and have an instrument for the defence of their common interests.

The creation of this association marks the starting point of a series of actions considered urgent and that are of common concern, so the next step will be to request a meeting with the Ministries of Agriculture, Food and Environment and of Economy and Competitiveness to present themselves as an association and outline their concerns and projects as regards cherry cultivation, export protocols and exceptional authorisations.
