Vegetable prices remain high in Sichuan

Generally speaking, vegetable prices will go back to their normal levels after the Chinese Latern Festival.

However this year the vegetable price went down slowly and the current price is still higher than the same period of last year. Taking February as an example, among the 27 monitored vegetable varieties, about 90% of their prices were higher, and 60% of their prices were higher than 10% of their retail prices in the same period of last year. Spring onion prices also doubled in comparison with that of the same period last year.

Based on the investigation data, the majority of the vegetables sold in Chengdu City are mainly imported from other regions in China. This is because of the special geographical location of Chengdu city, the vegetable varieties from this region cannot resist the cold weather condition.

When the extreme weather such as heavy rain, snow and frost occurred before the spring festival, certain vegetables were frozen to death, which led to the low production volume of local vegetables. Next to this, the yields are not in very good quality condition. For example, the local lettuce appears hollow, which impacts their sales in the market.
