Nico Kotze - Bonaire Fruit

Challenging end to South African stonefruit season

The South African plum season has been a challenging one due to the heat and drought, but according to Nico Kotze, Head of Marketing at Bonaire Fruit, the prices have been above average with a solid demand for fruit throughout the season. Sizing has been smaller and harvesting earlier than previous years, a similar trend to grapes. A lot of South American fruit has been entering the market, especially Europe, in the last two weeks bringing prices down a bit."

"The quality of the Chilean and Peruvian fruit may see challenges due to a lot of rain, as they are experiencing the opposite effects of El Nino than South Africa," explains Nico.

“The current heat and drought will have an influence on the coming citrus season with some areas more affected than others. We are seeing that dams on our farms, especially in the Northern Provinces, are 40/50% full. For this season water will be sufficient for a fair crop, maybe a size smaller. Bonaire started harvesting lemons in week 7 and expect Star Ruby grapefruit in week 11, about ten days earlier than normal. However for next season the dams should already be around 65% full, so we are hoping for some more summer rains. 100mm rain was recorded at Maswiri Farm in Limpopo last Friday.”
