Carsten Berger potato trade

"Germany: “By mid February demand will increase"

The first month of this new year is almost over and the trade in many German wholesales markets is quite restrained, and that is also the case in the potato trade. “It is extremely quiet on the market at the moment,” states a wholesaler from the potato trading company Carsten Berger in Hamburg. “The supply of potatoes is sufficient, but the demand is lacking.” The supply can easily satisfy the customers’ needs.

The sales of the potatoes is subdued but continuous, and therefore there are no big changes in price.

Imported potatoes
“We have, in addition to German potatoes, small potatoes from France and the Annabelle variety from Cyprus in our range at the moment,” says the wholesaler from Hamburg. “But for these the demand of the customers isn’t very high either.” The business hasn’t picked up yet.

But the current situation does not disconcert the experienced wholesaler. “It is usually very quiet at the wholesales markets in January and February,” the expert explains, “In mid February the trade will improve and the demand will increase.” And then the trader will see where the journey takes him in 2016.
