Web retailers package orders in cardboard boxes enriched with tomato plant fibers

Web retailers are choosing boxes enriched with tomato plant material to send their packages in. The 'Verse Oogst Box' (Fresh Harvest Box), an online ordering service from The Greenery for fresh fruits and vegetables that you can order directly with the grower, is a great example of one of these boxes. The 'Verse Oogst Box' is made out of solid cardboard and holds 10 kg of fruits and vegetables. The growers cooperative, Harvest House, packages tomatoes in cardboard boxes enriched with tomato fibers. Harvest House supplies these boxes (250 grams boxes and 750 gram boxes) to HelloFresh, the international online service for fresh meal ingredients.

Every year 85 million kg of tomato fibers are left over and they are composted. It is now possible to not compost this material but instead convert it into valuable raw material that can be made into solid cardboard in combination with old fibers of paper. This unique process takes place in Solidus Solutions cardboard factory, where the cardboard is processed into a variety of different packaging. Tomatoes can be packed in boxes made of the same material. These solid cardboard boxes enriched with tomato fibers are also 100% recyclable. This way the raw materials are completely used up and we can contribute to a circular economy.

To achieve this development, Solidus Solutions worked together with a unique consortium of partners in Westland, called Bio Base Westland. Solidus Solutions has already been producing packaging for 3kg and 5kg boxes made out of this same material.

During the Fruit Logistica trade fair on February 3, 4, 5, 2016 in Berlin Solidus Solutions will talk more about the developments in enriching cardboard with tomato fibers.
