According to the Spanish Association of Frozen Vegetable Processors (ASEVEC), the production of frozen vegetables continues to grow and show its strength in recent years, despite the economic crisis. Also, it is marketed as "100% Spanish produce."
As explained by ASEVEC, "due to higher domestic demand and exports, a considerable increase has been registered in the production of frozen vegetables in recent years. We have gone from the 337,000 tonnes produced in 2000 to 571,000 tonnes in 2014."
As for 2015, while still waiting for official confirmation of the data, ASEVEC expects a very similar figure to that achieved in the previous year. In addition to the production accounted for by ASEVEC, which represents 85% of the sector, we must add that of other producers, resulting in a total of approximately 641,000 tonnes of vegetables.
In terms of vegetable varieties, ASEVEC highlights the development of the broccoli production (the most exported vegetable), which in 2000 stood at around 37,160 tonnes and now exceeds 70,000 tonnes. Peas have also gone from 37,399 tonnes in 2000 to 71,000 tonnes in 2014, and carrots have grown from 15,444 to 31,000 tonnes in 14 years.
In global terms, the main items in the Spanish export market are green beans, followed by peas and spinach. When it comes to combinations, salads and vegetable stews reach the highest sales volumes.
