Cold weather decreases willingness to buy - especially at farmer's markets

The wintry cold weather has a negative influence on the wholesale trade. “At the moment it is really quiet at the wholesale’s market,” tells salesman Erdal Kaplan of the company bunnfrucht established at the wholesales market in Frankfurt am Main, “The cold weather influences the sales and the demand of the customers.” Tuesday morning the temperatures were well below zero at -6 degrees Celsius.

Growing group of customers
While the number of customers from supermarkets decreases, the number of customers from the weekly farmer's and street markets increases. Now there are wholesalers with their customer base existing of 70% of farmer's and street market traders. Then it can have dramatic consequences for the wholesaler if the customers are absent. Erdal Kaplan knows that too, “You really notice it if the customers are absent.”

“We notice the decreased willingness to purchase, especially from the farmer's and street market traders. But on the whole we are satisfied,” states Kaplan, “We can’t complain about the quality and the quality of the products, they are good.”

Citrus fruit
Citrus fruits are selling particularly well at present. "The low temperatures have boosted the sales of citrus fruits. The demand has clearly increased. And the prices of Spanish fruit is fairly stable,” explains the salesman.

According to Kaplan change is in sight. "We expect that the situation for wholesalers will improve again in February," states the expert.
