Bangladesh: Potato production pleases farmers

Farmers in Panchagargh, Bangladesh, have started harvesting the potato crop, and they are happy both with the bumper production and the prices. The crop grew well this year due to good weather and the harvest will continue until the end of the month.

Farmers are hoping that this year's bumper crop will make up for the losses they incurred in the previous year. Last year, farmers suffered a setback due to higher production costs and a fall in potato prices.

Currently, a sack of the Granola potato variety is selling at Tk900-1000. The large sized Granola variety is being exported to some European countries.

Department of Agricultural and Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers in the district cultivated potato on 4,300 hectares of land in the current season with a production target of 73,400 tonnes of potato.

Deputy Director of DAE M Asraf Ali said the weather was favorable for potato cultivation in the district. Late blight and other diseases did not affect the potato farming and as a result farmers expect a bumper crop.
