Greenhouse production also impacted by changing weather patterns

Changing weather patterns are impacting fruit and vegetable production across North and South America. It is not just field-grown produce that is being affected. “Yields in our greenhouses all throughout Mexico are significantly down,” says Jimmy Coppola with Westmoreland-TopLine Farms. The company has greenhouses from the northern part of Mexico down to the south with the biggest concentration being in Central Mexico.

Lower light levels
“El Niño has played a major role in the differentiating weather patterns and it affects production on all items,” shared Coppola. “Lower than normal temperatures in combination with lower light levels reduce yields across the board.”

Customers understand
“It is extremely difficult to meet our customer’s demand,” added Coppola. “Field-grown produce has been affected as well, putting even more demand on greenhouse grown. Fortunately, our customers have been very understanding as the whole industry is facing this issue. As a result, prices of greenhouse grown produce are very high and stay high for longer stretches than normal.”

Westmoreland-TopLine Farms consistently grows the same vegetable varieties in Mexico during the winter as the company does in spring/summer out of Canada. Within the tomato category, the company grows beefsteak, cluster, heirloom and roma tomatoes as well as grape tomatoes, mini roma grape tomatoes and medley tomatoes. In addition, long sweet peppers, mini sweet peppers, bell peppers, seedless cucumbers, mini seedless cucumbers and baby eggplant are part of the company’s product selection.
