UK: Warm weather affecting root veg harvest

The warm and wet weather has been having an effect on crops all over Europe and the UK is no different. Peter Crowe from Produce World said one positive thing was bigger Brussels sprouts in the run up to Christmas.

"But the weather has presented problems for field stored crops such as carrots and parsnips. The soil should be cold, dry and insulated with straw at this time of the year but it is not, instead it is warm and wet. This will have some affect on our packout rates for those root vegetables."

The rain and saturated soil is making harvest difficult, "It is so muddy in the fields, other years we have been challenged by frozen ground. I am not sure how the overall volumes will be affected, we won't know until after the harvest is done," explains Crowe.

Produce World is based in Peterborough and has not been affected by floods which have affected northern England and Scotland. Although the company does have growers in Scotland they are not in the badly affected areas.

He agreed that 2015 had been a peculiar year right from the start, a cool dull May did not encourage growth and summer brought one of the worst aphid infections in years to carrots and broccoli.
