US(CA): Cauliflower supplies are improving
After a supply shortage in the weeks leading up to the December holidays, cauliflower supplies are starting to improve. “For the past two weeks, supplies from the desert areas in Yuma (AZ) and Imperial Valley (CA) were sporadic, but finally volumes are getting there,” says Henry Dill with Pacific International Marketing. Cold December weather delayed the start of the season with about three weeks. “The weather forecast is good and we are looking at pretty good supplies from the desert as well as Santa Maria for the next two weeks,” Dill adds.
Demand expected to keep up
Dill believes demand should stay strong despite the holiday peak being over. “Cauliflower is still a cooking vegetable that has received lots of press for being a superfood. With volumes picking up, prices should come down making it a bit more affordable and people will be less resistant to buy cauliflower.”
On January 4, cauliflower reported $30 - $32 for a carton size 12s. This is $10 less than a week before.
