Bangladesh: Onion growers recoup last year's losses

Growers in the Bogra district of Bangladesh are hoping to recoup last year's losses with a bumper crops of the early onion variety T-Aman BINA-7 Dhan. So far, weather conditions have been favourable and the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has provided a measured agri-imput to make the early winter cultivars a success.

The DAE has set a target of onion cultivation on 203 hectares of land in twelve upazilas in Bogra district during the current Rabi season, with a production target of 1.5 tonnes per hectare.

The target is likely to be exceeded, as farmers are expected to cultivate potatoes on larger areas of land than the previous season.

In order to ensure the programme's success, the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute and a number of NGOs have taken steps to provide quality onion seeds among the farmers to ensure proper cultivation.
