Peru to allocate 30,000 hectares of berries for export in 2021

Peru will achieve the intended 30,000 hectares for berries (Blueberry, raspberry, physalis, strawberry and blackberry), for export and to supply the world market that wants this type of product, said the President of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velasquez. He stated that they had decided to bet on this product since September 2011, when he started heading Sierra Exportadora. He also said that it was one of the products that had given them the most satisfaction.

"Our forecast is that, among all these cultures and the innovation developed by the Government, by 2021 we will be nearing the 30,000 new hectares dedicated to produce what the world market wants and we will have involved the highlands of Peru in this successful agricultural exports," he told the Andina Agency. Velasquez said that, after considering the possible success of such products, the Peru Berries Program, which prioritized support to small, medium, and large producers, including the rural population, had been created. In this regard, he said that they hoped to have 7,000 hectares of cranberry for 2021 and to continue supporting raspberry crops, which are mainly grown by small producers. "Raspberry has a high global demand. World production amounts to 200,000 tons and Chile has an agricultural unit of 0.6 hectares. We want to have a hectare for raspberries," he added.
