“We, at the moment, only focus on the production of Japanese muskmelons. We are the only company that grows Japanese muskmelons in China. This year, we work from two production bases. We have a plantation in Hainan province, from which we can harvest melons from December until the following May. We have a second plantation in Shanxi province. Next year we will expand our production base to Hebei province,” according to Zheng Jian Jun, the marketing manager of Hainan Pure Green Agricultural R&D. The company specialises in the production of premium muskmelons for the Chinese market.

“We import our seeds from Japan. In addition, we run our own seed research programme. We recently planted 70 hectares (1000 mu) of new varieties. Our first harvest will be next year.”
Muskmelon production in Hainan
“Our melon is known for its appearance and flavour. It has a high sugar and water content. Sugar levels are higher than 15 brix. The taste is very sweet. Our wholesale price is 16 yuan per kg. The retail price in supermarkets for end-customers is about 32 yuan per / kg.”
Zheng Jian Jun is confident about the future: “the production of Japanese muskmelons requires technical expertise and high investment costs. So far we are the only producer in China. The market is good and we have little competition. Our main competitor is the Taiwan melon variety, also a premium melon. Our product is still new on the market and new to many Chinese customers. We now want to increase our brand name and reputation to propel sales.”

“Our melons are a premium fruit in China. The Chinese premium fruit market is well developed. People are willing to buy premium fruits and have enough money to afford these purchases. Our aim is to keep producing high quality melons and to maintain a stable market position.”
“We recently invested in new packaging and design. All our melons are packed under our 'MeiLong' brand name. One box contains 6 to 8 melons and weights approximately 10 kg. In the future, we will choose our best quality melons to do a special gift package. Then we will pack one melon per box.”
“At present, we have no overseas business. We sell to supermarkets and wholesale markets in China. According to our customers at the wholesale market of Guangdong, some of our products are sold through to Hong Kong and Macao. In the future we want to invest in an internet sales channel.”
