Venezuela: Pests proliferate in Nueva Esparta

A strange proliferation of pests affecting fruit trees and some vegetable crops has been recorded in the state of Nueva Esparta.

The pink mealybug has been detected in crops of pepper, eggplant, papaya, lime, while the production of mango, loquat and other fruits are being attacked by fruit flies.

Given the circumstances and the importance of these crops, the regional government announced the formation of an inter-agency team that will determine the necessary controls and actions that need be implemented to prevent the advance of these pests.

Mario Escalante, director of People's Power for Planning and Regional Development, said that the work would be developed by representatives of the Ministry of Popular Power for Agriculture and Lands, and its dependencies.

"We will sign an agreement in which the bodies with jurisdiction in the matter agree to participate with personnel, vehicles, administrative and technical resources for the execution of the control measures, which will definitely benefit the population, especially the agricultural sector," he said.

Margarita pepper is one of the most protected productions, there even is a Practical Manual for artisanal seed production of margarita pepper prepared for the FAO stating its planting and treatment procedures. There is also a movement so it becomes the fourth Venezuelan product designation of origin, such as Chuao cocoa, Pecaya Cocuy and Venezuela Rum.
