Italy: Fewer plums but of higher quality

We have talked with Agrintesa general director Cristian Moretti for a comment on the plum campaign.

"The season is looking good, definitely better than last year, when there were quality problems. The summery weather improved organoleptic qualities and pushed consumption."

The cooperative has been cultivating this fruit for many years and, lately, it has been investing in new varieties. "Thanks to the cooperation with Sun World, we are introducing varieties - black ones with a red flesh in particular - that have high Brix levels, compact flesh and big grades."

In 2014, Agrintesa partners harvested 26,000 tons of plums from June to December.

"This year, we will produce 15% less summer varieties and 25-30% less Angeleno, so we should still reach 10,000 tons anyway."

Summer varieties are sent mainly to retailers, whereas Angeleno plums are sent abroad.

"I am rather optimistic as regards the final part of the campaign. The temperature ranges in the last two weeks improved the colour of Angeleno, which also has good Brix levels and an ideal toughness. We should sell the fruit over three-four months and reach good prices that are profitable for partners."
