Hungary: Parsley root considerably more expensive

Parsley root has reached astronomical prices in Hungarian stores as a result of the impact of drought, the Russian embargo and the drastic reduction in harvest volumes. In recent weeks, some stores have been selling them for up to HUF 1000-1200 per kilo (3.19-3.83 Euro). This means that in many places, prices have doubled compared to last year.

At this time last year, according to statistics, a kilo of parsley root cost HUF 600-800 (1.92-2.55 Euro) for retail sale and HUF 400-500 (1.28-1.60 Euro) in the wholesale market.

Ledó Ferenc, president of the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization (FruitVeB), said that growers planted less parsley because of the uncertainty generated by the Russian embargo and the considerable import volumes in winter and spring, mainly from Poland, which kept prices low. The planted acreage this year has totalled 1400-1500 hectares; a drop compared to the 1,900 hectares of recent years.
