Romania: Maramures to export about 100 tonnes of berries

Berry producers in Maramures, Romania, could export over 100 tonnes of fruit to the European market this autumn, mainly blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.

"We estimate that this year we could export 100 tonnes of berries. It is still early in the season and only some volumes of blackberries and blueberries have reached the warehouse so far, but by the end of August, mid-September, we hope to harvest the necessary volume to export to Germany," said the spokesperson of the Maramures Forestry Department, Eng. Mihai Lesan.

In the overseas market, these berries are considered a green product because they come from high mountain areas, away from pollution.

"The harvest of berries in alpine areas starts at an altitude of 500 metres and reaches almost 2,000 metres, in areas located far from cities or towns where there is no pollution, especially dust. Berries which could be considered organic grow in their natural environment without the need for human intervention. A tonne of berries can yield a contractor with over 1,500 Euro, although this is also highly dependent on market demand, which can result in significant price swings. It's business season for us and we'll try to manage it in the most effective manner," explained Mihai Lesan.

This year, besides berries, several varieties of mushrooms and herbs will also be exported.
